Athletics Day

"On your marks, get set, go!" I zoomed in front of some children. I felt excited. I felt wind racing to my face. I heard cheering from my left ear. I saw the green finish cone fight in front of my face. I said, "I was first!" I lined up. I told Mis Clearwater. I got a golden ticket for sitting respectfully on the ground.

Wow Theo! What an amazing piece of writing. I love the way you hooked the reader by starting with speech. I love that you used exciting words like zoomed and racing. This is a well crafted piece of writing. I can't wait to read some more of your stories!

The Otago Skink was cute. It was 4 years old. The gecko was a female. It was huge. Mrs Barrow is a Scientist. The geckos  eyes are thin. It was goldy brown. It carry’s salmonella and if you put your hand in your mouth after touching it you could get sick.

A gecko (only found in the North Island).

 Look at those feet!
Very cool markings to help it camouflage.

The gecko feels like a frog and the gecko has no eyelids.

The gecko was big and the Otago skink was small. There are different types of lizards.

Jewelled green gecko
Geckos have baggy, velvety skin and broad heads. They eat insects, fruit and nectar. They usually give birth to two young in late summer / early autumn.
There are at least 39 species of gecko in New Zealand. However, to date, only 18 of these have been formally described, and further discoveries of new species are still very likely as we learn more about them.

These species belong to two genera

Hoplodactylus

11 formally described species and an estimated 20 species still to be described.
Colour: Mostly grey or brown, with mottled, striped or banded patterns. However, the harlequin gecko, H. rakiurae, is often very brightly coloured.

Duvaucel’s gecko (Hoplodactylus
duvaucelii), Hen Island
Habits: Mainly nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), although some species, such as the harlequin gecko, are also active during the day.

Naultinus

7 formally described species and 1 yet to be described).
Colour: Usually bright green, but sometimes bright yellow. However, the adult males of some South Island species are grey or brown.
Habits: Diurnal (active during the day).

Lizards are reptiles of the order Squamata, normally possessing four legs, external ear openings and movable eyelids. Geckos are small to average sized lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae which are found in warm climates throughout the world. Geckos differ from other lizards in terms of their living conditions, physical charateristics and their eating habits.

Haiku Poems

We have been learning about syllables. We have written some poems that follow the Haiku structure of 5 syllables on the first line, then 7 then 5 again. Check out some of our poems!

Smiling faces show,
The leaves rustle on the trees,
The sun shines so bright.

We are learning to add speech to our writing.

“3,2,1,” said Miss McDonald, “onto the mat now.” We went down to the mat.

“Ahhhhh! I jammed my finger!” I cried. I cried and I cried. Blood dripped down my finger. “What happened?” said mum.
By Paige

“Yay! It’s my birthday!” I screamed in the morning. I raced to Mum and jumped on her. I was bouncing higher than a kangaroo.
By Safi

“Ouch!” I screamed as my Mum slamed the car door on my finger. Blood streamed down my middle finger. The nail almost came off. My finger was pumping like a bee.
By Theo

I screamed when Alyssa told me about the ghost. It jumped at her and tried to kill her she said to me. “Wow,” I screamed, “Is there really a ghost?”
“Yes,” she replied.
“Oh no!” I said.
By Becky

“Pass the controller to me,” said my brother.
“NO! NO!” I said. I felt mad. My mum woke up.
“What is all that noise?” she asked.
“Flynn wants the controller. But I had it first!” I replied.
“Pass the controlled to me,” said mum.
“But I haven’t had a go,” said Flynn.
“Well your going to have to have a go tomorrow,” said mum.
“But you can have a go after school,” I said.
“Oh I can’t,” said Flynn, “Because we’re going up north.”
By Alyssa

“Aaahhhhh!” I screamed. The neighbours could hear me. I called my mum. Mum gave me a hug. I cried. Tears rolled down my face. My mum shouted at Jake, “Go to your room.”  My brother stomped to his room.  My finger was sore. It was bleeding. I got a sticky plaster.
By Lili H

“Ahh!” I screamed as Jade P sprinted towards me. He dived at me but I sprinted away. He hit his face on the grass but it didn’t hurt.

Assembly
On Monday we packed our bags.  Then we lined up to go to the hall for assembly.  When we arrived we sat on the ground.  I was nervous because I didn’t know who was getting a certificate.  When Miss McDonald said my name, I was jumping up and down with excitement.  My heart was beating very fast.  I’m so happy I was chosen.

It's a beautiful day,
With frost on the ground.

Where children are found.
